A good fit if you want

  • The look of painted wood lap without wood's upkeep
  • The best average resale return of any siding: about 114% of cost (JLC Cost vs Value 2025)
  • A noncombustible exterior
  • A product built for hail and freeze climates

Trade-offs

  • It is heavy and needs dust control when cut, so installation takes skill and time.
  • Joints and field-painted boards need periodic caulk and paint; a factory finish lasts longer.
  • Installed cost is mid to upper range.

What to check on a quote

  • Climate product. James Hardie's HZ5 line is made for hail, snow and freeze zones like ours.
  • Factory finish or field paint. Hardie's ColorPlus finish carries a 15-year finish warranty; normal fading and chalking are excluded.
  • Installation to the manufacturer's instructions, since warranty coverage depends on it.

Cost

About $5 to $14 per square foot installed, national 2026 range.
